Coundon Lodge is a grade 2 listed building overlooking Coventry’s Ancient Arden. Built in 1780 and extended many times. We are surrounded by country views and have the peaceful ambience of country life yet are less than 2 miles from Coventry City Centre.

 

The Lodge has been in the McDermott family since 1983 when we purchased it and converted it into a Care Home. We acquired the property from an Oxford College who were bequeathed it by the previous owner Mr Arthur Humphrey Jagger (1894 – 1962). A Barrister and partner in Walter Browett’s law firm in Coventry, he met his wife Ruth, Walter’s daughter there and went on to succeed Walter in the firm. Arthur Jagger’s father, Arthur Edward Jagger (1851-1920) had become Chairman of the Singer Motor Company at the invitation of his near neighbour George Singer. One of the famous Guests at Coundon Lodge was Charles Dickens who apparently stayed here for some time whilst writing ‘Great Expectations’ published in 1860. Indeed, there is a London Lawyer in the book called Mr Jaggers!

 

The Lodge has many authentic features including the fireplace in the drawing room which was carved out of one of the Medieval Coventry Gates (12 gates around Mediaeval Coventry with Monks who had taken a vow of silence, hence being ‘Sent to Coventry’ – not speaking to someone.) and is mentioned as part of the Lodge’s Listed Building status. Also mentioned is the sweeping stone staircase in the centre hall under the lightwell on the top floor. There is a Coach House with views over Coundon Wedge with a courtyard and bell to inform Mi’ Lady that her Carriage awaits, a Stable block and Victorian Greenhouse all waiting for renovation.

 

We are looking forward to receiving guests coming for various events including the Coventry City Sky Blues soccer season at the CBS Arena, also Bryan Adams in May ’24. The BBC ‘Good Food’ Summer Show and BBC Gardner’s World Live in June. Then the Utilita Arena has dates for Peter Kay, Celine Dion and others. The Rialto has a Motown vs Disco night; Dolly Parton vs Kenny Rogers and a Whitney Party night coming up.
